Tick (✓) the correct answer

Question:

Tick (✓) the correct answer

The sum of two numbers is $\frac{-4}{3}$. If one of the numbers is $-5$, what is the other?

(a) $\frac{-11}{3}$

(b) $\frac{11}{3}$

(C) $\frac{-19}{3}$

(d) $\frac{19}{3}$

Solution:

(b) $\frac{11}{3}$

Let the other number be x.

Now,

$x+(-5)=\frac{-4}{3}$

$\Rightarrow x=\frac{-4}{3}+($ Additive inverse of $-5)$

$\Rightarrow x=\frac{-4}{3}+5$

$=\frac{-4}{3}+\frac{5}{1}$

$=\frac{(-4)+15}{3}$

$=\frac{11}{3}$
