The hypotenuse of a right angled triangle

Question:

The hypotenuse of a right angled triangle with its legs of lengths 3x  x  4x is

(a) 5X

(b )7x

(c) 16x

(d) 25x

Solution:

(a) Given, lengths of the legs of right angled triangle are $3 x$ and $4 x$.

Now, hypotenuse $=\sqrt{(3 x)^{2}+(4 x)^{2}}$      [using Pythagoras theorem]

$=\sqrt{9 x^{2}+16 x^{2}}$

$=\sqrt{25 x^{2}}=5 x$
