Chapter 1: Matter in Our Surrounding

Class 9 science textbook starts with the chapter “Matter in Our Surroundings. Now, scientists have come up with 2 types of classification, i.e., based on physical property and chemical properties. In this chapter, you will learn about the physical properties of matter.

Physical Property: The matter is made up of particles and these particulars are very tiny. The particles of matter have space between them, they are continuously in motion and they attract each other. As we know that the particles of matter are continuously moving, so that they possess kinetic energy. As the temperature rises, particles move faster. The matter around us exists in 3 different states – solids, liquids and gases. All the 3 states of matters have been discussed in-depth with the help of so many day to day activities. Further, the textbook explains how matter changes its state. The state of matter can be changed by changing temperature or pressure. This phenomenon of change of a liquid into vapour at any temperature below its boiling point is called evaporation. The rate change of evaporation depends upon the surface area exposed to the atmosphere, the humidity , the temperature, and the wind speed. Evaporation also causes cooling.

Definition of matter : solid, liquid and gas; characteristics – shape, volume, density; change of state –  melting (absorption of heat), freezing, evaporation (cooling by evaporation), condensation, sublimation.

Chapter 2: Is Matter Around Us Pure?

In this chapter of NCERT Class 9 Science you will learn about mixtures, solutions, properties of solutions, separation of mixtures, and physical and chemical changes. What is mixture- Mixtures are summed up by more than one kind of pure form of matter.. What is the solution- A solution is a homogeneous mixture of two or more substances. 2. Second law of motion: The rate of change of momentum of an object is proportional to the applied unbalanced force in the direction of the force.
