Important Topics covered in Chapter 9 - Mensuration
Mensuration is a branch of geometry concerned with the measurement of dimensions such as length, area and volume. Our NCERT solutions for class 8 maths chapter 9 will focus on Mensuration-related topics mentioned below.
9.1 Introduction |
|
9.2 Area of a Polygon |
|
9.3 Solid Shapes |
|
9.4 Surface Area of Cube, Cuboid and Cylinder |
9.4.1 Cuboid 9.4.2 Cube 9.4.3 Cylinders |
9.5 Volume of Cube, Cuboid and Cylinder |
9.5.1 Cuboid 9.5.2 Cube 9.5.3 Cylinder |
9.6 Volume and Capacity |
9.1 Introduction - In this chapter the students will be introduced to closed 2-dimensional, 3-dimensional figures such as cubes, cuboid cylinders, polygons, etc. They will also learn how to calculate the area, the volume, and the surface area.
9.2 Area of a Polygon - Polygon area can be calculated in the same way that quadrilateral area can be calculated by dividing the shapes into triangles and calculating the area.
The pentagon of ABCD is split into three parts by making two diagonals of AC and AD. So, the area of ABCD is = the area of ∆ABC + the area of ∆ACD + the area of ∆AED.
For many students, the formulas for determining the area of various shapes are hard to remember. We have provided several examples in our NCERT solution for class 8 maths chapter 9 that will help a lot to students in memorizing the formulas.
9.3 Solid Shapes - In previous lessons, the students have learnt about 2D & 3D shapes. So, in this section, we are going to see some solid shapes like Cuboids, Cubes, cylinders, etc. The Mathematics faculty members of eSaral have provided outstanding visual aids to illustrate the various forms of solid shapes presented in the NCERT solutions in chapter 9 of class 8 Maths. This allows students to better understanding of each shape and remember it correctly.
9.4 Surface Area of Cube, Cuboid and Cylinder - Here, you will learn the surface area of cube, cuboid and cylinder.
9.4.1 Cuboid - A cuboid has six rectangles. To calculate the cuboid surface area, add all the surfaces.
Let’s write the dimensions of each side of the cuboid. We know that there are three identical faces in a cuboid. Let’s add the total area of each face of the cuboid to the total area of the box. That’s area I, area II, area III, area IV, area V, area VI.
Surface area of a cuboid = h × l + b × l + b × h + l × h + b × h + l × b
So the total surface area = 2 (h × l + b × h + b × l) = 2(lb + bh + hl) where h, l and b are the height, length and width of the cuboid respectively.
9.4.2 Cube - It has six rectangles like a cuboid. The surface area of a cube can be calculated by adding all the surfaces.
The surface area of cube = Total Surface Area = 6(side)^2
9.4.3 Cylinder - The surface of the cylinder is composed of two parts. The first part is the top/bottom face of the cylinder and the second part is the curved surface of the cylinder. To calculate the surface area of the cylinder, we sum the surface areas of the two parts.
Surface Area of Cylinder = Curved Surface + Area of Circular top/base or
Surface Area of Cylinder = 2πr (r + h)
9.5 Volume of Cube, Cuboid and Cylinder - Here, you will learn the volume of cube, cuboid and cylinder.
9.5.1 Cuboid - It is a three-dimensional shape. It has a length, a width, and a height. To measure the cuboid’s volume, let’s multiply all three dimensions.
The volume of Cuboid = L x B x H
9.5.2 Cube - Cube is a type of cuboid where the length, width, and height are all the same.
volume of cube = L * L * L
9.5.3 Cylinder - It is also a three-dimensional figure. The volume of any cylinder can be determined by multiplying the base area of the cylinder by its height.
The volume of the Cylinder = πr2 * h
9.6 Volume and Capacity - There's not a lot of difference between them.
-
The term volume is used to describe the amount of space that an object occupies.
-
Capacity refers to the quantity that a container holds.
