Topics Covered in Exercise 7.2 Class 8 Mathematics Questions

Ex 7.2 class 8 math solutions for chapter 7 Comparing Quantities is based on the topic finding discounts, estimation in percentage, sales tax/value added tax/goods and services tax which are available here in proper explanation.

1.

Finding Discounts

  • Estimation in percentages

2.

Sales Tax/Value Added Tax/Goods and Services Tax

  1. Finding Discounts - Discounting is a term used to describe a sale where products are offered at a reduced price. In other words, discount is the reduction in the market price in order to increase the sales and promote the products.

The discount amount can be calculated by subtracting the Sale price from the market price.

Discount = Market price – Sale Price

To calculate the discount percentage

Discount % = discount/market price x 100

  • Estimation in percentages

An example can be used to understand the estimation.

Example - If the price of a product in a shop is 498.80 and it is available at a discount of 15 % then how would you estimate the amount to be paid?

Solution - In order to determine the percentage, the following steps must be followed:

  • For example, let’s round the value of 498.8 to the nearest multiple of 10, which is 500.

  • Calculate the 10% of 500.

               500 x 10 / 100=50

  •  Find the half of it, 1/2 × 50 = 25.

  • Let’s add both the values 50 + 25 to get 75.

2. Sales Tax/Value Added Tax/Goods and Services Tax

Sales Tax is the amount collected by the government from the consumer on the sale of a product.

The sales tax is collected by the shopkeeper and paid to the government by the customer. Therefore, the sales tax is always on the selling price of the product and added to the total bill value.

In the past, you had to pay Sales tax on your bill. Nowadays, you mostly pay Value Added Tax (VAT).

Formula

If the tax rate is x%, then the Total price after tax would be

Final price = cost of the item + x / cost of item × 100
