NCERT Solutions for Class 11 Maths Chapter 2 Relations and Functions Exercise 2.1 - PDF Download
JEE Mains & AdvancedNCERT solutions class 11 maths chapter 2 Relations and Functions exercise 2.1 illustrates the fundamental concepts associated with the cartesian product of sets. Given two sets of elements P and Q that are non empty, the cartesian product of PQ is the set of all the ordered pairs of the elements from P and Q. i.e., P × Q = { (p,q) : p ∈ P, q ∈ Q }. A fundamental knowledge of the cartesian product of sets is necessary to answer all the questions in ex2.1.

Cartesian Products of Sets |
-
Ordered Pair - An ordered pair is a set of objects in which one element is assigned to the first element and the other element to the second element, denoted by (a,b. Where 'a' is the first component and 'b' is the second component of the ordered set.
-
Cartesian Products of Sets - A Cartesian product consisting of two Non-empty sets, A and B, is the set of all ordered pairs in which the first component of the pair is from A and the second component is from B. The cartesian product A × B is the set of all ordered pairs of elements.
A × B = {(a, b) : a ∈ A and b ∈ B}
If either P or Q is the null set, then P × Q will also be empty set, i.e., P × Q = ϕ
Properties of Cartesian Product
(I) Two ordered pairs are equal, if and only if the corresponding first elements are equal and the second elements are also equal.
(II) If there are p elements in A and q elements in B, then there will be pq elements in A × B, i.e., if n(A) = p and n(B) = q, then n(A × B) = pq
(III) If A and B are non-empty sets and either A or B is an infinite set, then so is A × B
(IV) A × A × A = {(a, b, c) : a, b, c ∈ A}. Here (a, b, c) is called an ordered triplet.
